Dinki Friends... Meet Aless AKA Boss Lady of Pim Pam
I love chatting to fellow small-biz owners about what gets them going and what grinds their gears about being your own boss. I have created a series of Q&As with some of my fave small brand owners in the hope we can share some behind the scenes insight into our lives as women in business.
Coming across Pim Pam couldn't have come at a better time for me, having been a 'cloth bum mum' for a few years now I'm always on the look out for new and exciting developments in the world of cloth nappies! I cam across Aless' work and fell in love with her fab prints. Her nappies are the best thing to come out of nappy changes!
Who are ya?
I'm Aless Baylis, Founder of Pim Pam reusable nappies. Mum of 2 crazy but cute girls.
How and when did you come up with the idea for Pim Pam?
I started working on Pim Pam in 2018 when my first daughter was 1 and I started working again. After having a year away from work I realised I needed a new challenge in my career. I had worked for years as a children’s illustrator and print designer before I went on maternity leave. I’d seen my illustrations on products over the years and I decided I wanted to produce my own products with my prints.
It took a while to decide what the product would be. At the time we were using cloth nappies on my daughter to try and reduce our plastic waste. We couldn't find a lot of print designs on the market that were more our style so that's when it came to me to combine reusable nappies with my own prints and illustrations. It's been a dream come true combining my illustrations, my love for well designed products, and a sustainable concept.
What things do you enjoy most in your job as Pim PamBoss Lady?
1. Definitely designing new prints as it's something I love doing and have been doing for years. I love putting collections and colours together.
2. Connecting with the lovely cloth nappy community on social media. Everyone isso lovely.
3. Seeing babies wearing our nappies. It makes me so happy to know that people like our nappies and that my prints make people smile.
What things do you enjoy least?
1. Having boxes of our stock all over the house.
2. Going to the post office in the rain.
3. Accounts!!!
Any advice for anyone starting out in the world of small biz ownership?
Do your research. Before I started I was so clueless about all of the small things I needed to do to start a business. It was totally worth spending some time doing lots of research rather than just jumping straight in.
But most of all just enjoy it and have fun!
What are your hopes and dreams for the future of Pim Pam? Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
Ooo that’s a good one. In 3 years time I’d like to have more sustainable products in our range. I’d love to do some collaborations with some of my favourite illustrators, that would be so cool.
